In a similar vein, AP broke those same shackles again in 2021 with perhaps one of watchmaking’s most controversial releases in a very long time, the Royal Oak Concept "Black Panther" Flying Tourbillon. A bold fusion of haute horlogerie and popular culture, this limited edition watch is a tribute to the Marvel superhero Black Panther, blending Audemars Piguet’s heritage with contemporary storytelling and pop culture. Venturing into new territory with this collaboration, the Royal Oak Concept "Black Panther" Flying Tourbillon is both a technical marvel and a collector’s dream. Made using the Royal Oak Concept as its base, it features a 42mm lightweight titanium and ceramic case that provides a modern, high-tech aesthetic that aligns perfectly with the aesthetic of Black Panther’s home of Wakanda. Featuring a hand-painted 3D rendition of Black Panther crouching upon the flying tourbillon carriage of its cal. 2965 movement, the Royal Oak Concept "Black Panther" Flying Tourbillon showcases another level to Audemars Piguet’s craftsmanship. The collaboration was born from Audemars Piguet’s vision to connect haute horology with modern pop culture, particularly through heroes who represent strength and innovation. Black Panther, being a symbol of royalty, intelligence, and futuristic tech, aligned perfectly with the Concept collection’s avant-garde design and cutting-edge mechanics. This model marks the beginning of a long-term partnership with Marvel, bringing a new kind of storytelling into watchmaking.

Each Black Panther figure is hand-sculpted and hand-painted by a single artisan using white gold. The level of detail, from the muscular structure to the suit's texture and facial features, is achieved through over 30 hours of meticulous engraving and painting. This gives each dial a unique, lifelike quality, making it as much a micro sculpture as it is a timepiece.

The flying tourbillon is not mounted on a bridge at the top, giving the illusion that it’s suspended mid-air. This design offers a more open, three-dimensional view of the mechanism, enhancing visual impact. It's also housed in AP’s in-house Caliber 2965, providing superb precision, while contributing to the futuristic design language of the Concept series.

While the Black Panther figure brings bold aesthetics, the watch remains fully aligned with the Royal Oak Concept’s technical DNA. It includes shock resistance, hand-wound movement, a 72-hour power reserve, and a titanium case with a high-tech ceramic bezel. It’s not just art; it's a performance-driven piece built for collectors who appreciate innovation inside and out.

The watch is limited to 250 pieces worldwide and was unveiled through an exclusive online event, which included a charity auction where a unique piece-unique Black Panther edition sold for over $5 million.
