The Aquanaut line, Introduced in 1997, the Aquanaut collection was designed and released as a more contemporary, casual, and sporty alternative to Patek Philippe’s classic traditional offerings. While it took inspiration from the Nautilus collection, the Aquanaut specifically targeted a new younger clientele through the use of its bold dial with heavy embossed pattern and tropical rubber strap - a first for Patek at the time. While this was seen as a controversial move by Patek’s collectors, the Aquanaut continued to grow within Patek’s catalog and in 2007 the ref. 5167A was launched as an entirely modernized variant of the Aquanaut that broke new ground for the collection. Continuing the Aquanaut’s sporty tradition but with a sleeker silhouette than its predecessor, the ref. 5167A was given a thinner case that covered a larger area, moving up from 36mm to 40mm in diameter - bringing it more in line with modern collector’s sizing preferences. Indeed, the ref. 5167A still retained the Aquanaut’s signature rounded octagonal bezel; however, it introduced an updated dial design. Instead of its embossed grid-like lines being thick, Patek swapped in a new design with thin, sharp lines that fit in with the stainless steel case’s sleek new aesthetic.Powered by the automatic cal. 26-330 SC, the modern Aquanaut ref. 5167A operates with the level of precision, accuracy, and reliability that you would expect. However, not all Aquanaut examples are equal. While it is perhaps one of Patek’s most coveted watches, there are co-signed examples of the ref. 5167A, like the one we have here, that features Tiffany & Co.’s signature at 6 o’clock, which marks it as an example that was retailed by the famed American jeweller and sold directly to a VIP client.
