Launched in 2006 as Patek Philippe’s first-ever automatic chronograph, the ref. 5980 was an unapologetic expansion of the Nautilus’ sports watch ethos through the simple fact that chronographs, at their core, are a complication catered for sports and activities. Luxuriously crafted from 18kt rose gold, the ref. 5980/1R maintains the Nautilus’ distinctive porthole-inspired case shape along with the model’s signature integrated bracelet and horizontally embossed dial design. Boasting a 40.5mm diameter, the ref. 5980/1R maintains the Nautilus’ modern profile, all while packing its case with the automatic cal. 28-520 C FUS movement, which features a flyback chronograph function. Identifiable through its single subdial at 6 o’clock, the ref. 5980/1R’s smoked black dial reveals its unique engineering, with its single sundial housing both its 60-minute and 24-hour chronograph subdials, stacked on top of one another. However, this particular ref. 5980/1R is even more special than ordinary production models thanks to its revered Tiffany & Co. signature sandwiched between its central pinion and Patek Philippe branding at 12 o’clock. A mark of a watch that was originally sold by the famed American jeweler to a VIP client, these co-signatures are amongst some of the most collectible aspects of modern watchmaking today, with the Tiffany & Co. stamp being the last example of co-branding that Patek Philippe still allows to this day, making it a memorable piece of Patek Philippe’s heritage.
