Description

Sitting within the pantheon of greats, the Rolex Daytona is a legendary watch that every watch lover can admire for one reason or another. From its long history, lengthy list of famous wearers, and array of intricacies, the Daytona has become the most sought-after timepiece that Rolex have offered. Releasing the first generation four-digit Daytona in 1963, it wasn’t until 1971 when the Daytona ref. 6263 was released. Produced until 1988 alongside the Daytona ref. 6265, the ref. 6263 was one of the last manually-wound Daytona references to be equipped with a Valjoux movement, which marked the move over to the modified Zenith-supplied cal. 4030. A vintage purist's dream, the ref. 6263 is amongst one of the most desirable vintage chronographs on the market. One of the last four-digit references to ever be produced, the ref. 6263 has an interesting blend of desirable traits that modernize its aesthetic as a vintage Daytona, fusing it with the current generation of Daytonas. Featuring screw-down chronograph pushers with a screw-down caseback and a black acrylic bezel insert, the ref. 6263 merges the modern Cerachrom bezel-wielding Daytona’s aesthetic with its rich vintage appeal to create a timepiece that delights thanks to offering the best of both the vintage and modern world’s aesthetic and wrist presence.Like other vintage Daytona references, the ‘Big Red’ ref. 6263 is made famous by its dial, which was either offered in silver or black. While not a Paul Newman ‘exotic’ dial, the ‘Big Red’ ref. 6263’s dial is still a notable and sought-after dial variant, with the red ‘Daytona’ script above its 12-hour chronograph subdial at 6 o’clock being larger than the script on standard ref. 6263 dials. A quirk of vintage Rolex collecting, the Big Red Daytona is a thoroughly collectible watch that Daytona aficionados adore, given its enduring appeal, rarity, and subtle distinction.
